The USS Fitzgerald is now in Yokosuka’s dry dock 4, where officials will conduct a full assessment and decide the next step for the damaged destroyer. Seven sailors were killed in a June 17 collision between the Fitzgerald and a Philippine-flagged cargo ship, about 64 miles southwest of the naval base. Officials will “conduct assessments that will inform options for long term repairs,” a Navy statement said Monday. They are trying to determine if the Fitzgerald is able to travel to the states under its own power or will need to be towed there for repairs. Portland Harbour Authority is looking for a partner to set up and operate a major commercial shipyard at Portland Harbour in Dorset, on the south coast of England, on the English Channel. It's a big opportunity for an investor to create a successful North West European ship repair facility, with floating dry docks. Find out more in this video, which includes Portland Harbour Authority Ltd CEO Steve Davies; The Rt Hon Oliver Letwin MP, Minister for Government Policy; Rear Admiral Chris Parry; and Liz Myles, Principal, Weymouth College. For a brochure, email: projects@portland-port.co.uk or call +44 (01)305 824044 Video summary: STEVE DAVIES: "There is strong demand and we are excellently positioned, both commercially and geographically." Portland Harbour is within 20 miles of the main European shipping lanes in NW Europe, and close to major cross-channel lanes. It's only 69 miles north of Cherbourg in France, and it's easy to connect by sea from Portland to the main European hub ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp. Portland Harbour is a naturally protected area of deep water. With 3.5 miles of massive breakwaters, it's also the second largest man-made harbour in the world. Vessels can come and go at all times. There are no tidal constraints. Pilotage time is just 30 minutes. It's an easy deviation to and from Portland harbour, for any of the hundreds of vessels that use the main English Channel and Cross-Channel shipping lanes every day. The harbour serves vessels as a one-stop-shop for a very wide range of skills and services. It's a successful enterprise. Portland Harbour Authority's ship repair concession is a long-term opportunity for an investor to develop a major North West European ship repair yard with floating dry docks. The authority would like to see a shipyard up and running in 18 months' time. All the permissions required to go ahead with a ship repair concession for at least 30 years have already been obtained. For the investor, this means there's no risk -- no uncertainty -- no time delays -- in establishing a new Portland ship repair facility. STEVE DAVIES: "We're looking for a partner who has the knowledge, experience and skills to operate a commercial shipyard, preferably with floating dry docks to deliver a high-quality, cost-effective service to the marine industry." Portland Harbour Authority has a good track record of establishing long-term relationships with major inward investors (such as Global Marine and Aegean Marine Petroleum Network). Up to 1000 people are employed on the Portland harbour estate, through 25 tenant businesses. Market research now indicates strong potential demand for a new shipyard. Over 95% of 300 ship owners said they would be interested in using Portland harbour for ship repairs. OLIVER LETWIN MP: "I very much hope that this project will attract the investment it needs because I think it should be a huge success. Portland already does a fantastic job and could do more." REAR ADMIRAL CHRIS PARRY: "Portland is a thriving commercial port on the south coast of England, on one of the busiest shipping routes of the world. "I believe that Portland has the unrivalled opportunity to be a world-class basing, maintenance and repair facility which can handle ships up to the scale of aircraft carriers and the largest cruise ships." Portland Harbour Authority's favoured site for development is The Queen's Pier (recently conserved, upgraded and strengthened at a cost of nearly £5 million). Portland harbour is the only port in the UK that can accommodate two or more Panamax-sized floating dry docks. There is also potential for Aframax-sized floating dry docks. The pier's berths can easily accommodate service vessels and pontoons. Landside paved areas can host ancillary shipyard activities. A skilled, reliable and flexible labour force is available for marine-related services. LIZ MYLES: "Weymouth College has substantial experience in marine engineering and shipyard work, the key skill areas for the shipyard repair facility at Portland. "Weymouth College would welcome the opportunity to support the shipyard by providing training in our world-class facilities." Big investments have been made in local transport. A road costing nearly £90 million was built ahead of 2012 Olympic Games sailing events, held in Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay. The number of Portland summer season cruise calls is expected to rise to 20 or more a year. The harbour is controlled through a modern and well-equipped harbour office. Portland Harbour is a highly secure environment, and one that's now ideally placed to expand into the large ship repair market. There is currently a shortage of dry docking facilities in NW Europe convenient, and cost-effective, to shipping using the English Channel. Portland Harbour offers excellent possibilities for planned dockings, major ship repair and conversions, as well as emergency repair visits.

I’m an Italian boatbuilder, filmmaker and independent researcher in cultural anthropology. My major areas of interest are coastal communities, boatbuiding technology and transmission of knowledge. My research interests focus on maritime cultures of the Indian Ocean from ethnographic and archaeological perspectives. This video is a chapter of my lifelong participant observation fieldwork. After graduating in Asian and African Languages and Civilizations I moved to Indonesia where I had a teaching assignment at State University of Jakarta. In those years I carried out a research project in maritime ethnography on living boatbuilding traditions in S-E Asia collecting data on boat types, construction techniques, local response to the introduction of western technology and its social and cultural effects on the maritime communities. The practical aspects of this fieldwork experience made me realize the limits of my methodology. All those wooden vessels were built "by eye" guided by an intangible knowledge and I considered my "blindness" a problem of epistemological relevance. I felt I couldn't really understand the development of the technology and investigate the transmission of knowledge without acquiring practical boatbuilding skills. Since then much of my time has been spent in boatyards working as apprentice boatbuilder in Tsunami-hit countries, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean.  In the last four years I've been working as wooden ship restorer at the maritime museum in Norway. I am also designing an appropriate and versatile technology which attempts to improve traditional boatbuilding. I believe in the potential key role of the boats to reduce isolation improving rural access and mobility through the development of rural water transport. On August 15, 1944 the mighty battleship Idaho arrived at Espiritu Santo in the Pacific and slipped into a floating dry dock so that emergency repairs could be made to the ship's blisters. This special film -- likely made by the crew of the battleship's observation aircraft -- documents the activities as the ship is maneuvered into position. The dry dock shown is likely one of the Large Auxiliary Floating Dry Docks (AFDB), probably AFDB/ABSD-1. This was constructed in sections during 1942 and 1943 at Everett Shipbuilding Co., Everett, WA., by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., Eureka, CA., the Pollack-Stockton Shipbuilding Co., Stockton, CA.., and Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., Morgan City, LA. During World War II ABSD-1 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and towed to Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides and assembled for service. Later it was disassembled and towed to Manicani Bay, P.I. and reassembled for service by September 1945. USS Idaho had been damaged during long days of combat that began with the bombardment of Saipan in June. With the landing assault underway on 15 June, the battleship moved to Guam for bombardment assignments. As the American fleet destroyed Japanese carrier air power in the Battle of the Philippine Sea from 19–21 June, Idaho protected the precious transport area and reserve convoys. After returning to Eniwetok from 28 June to 9 July, the ship began preinvasion bombardment of Guam on 12 July, and continued the devastating shelling until the main assault eight days later. As ground troops battled for the island, Idaho stood offshore providing vital support until anchoring at Eniwetok on 2 August. After repair, Idaho 's mighty guns were needed for the next giant amphibious assault on the way to Japan. She sailed from San Diego on 20 January 1945 to join a battleship group at Pearl Harbor. After rehearsals, she steamed from the Marianas on 14 February for the invasion of Iwo Jima. As Marines stormed ashore on 19 February, Idaho was again blasting enemy positions with her big guns, and fired star shells at night to illuminate the battlefield. She remained off Iwo Jima until 7 March, when she underway for Ulithi and the last of the great Pacific assaults – Okinawa. At the end of the conflict Idaho made her triumphal entry into Tokyo Bay with occupation troops on 27 August, and was anchored there during the signing of the surrender on board the Missouri on 2 September. Four days later she began the long voyage to the East Coast of the United States, steaming via the Panama Canal to arrive at Norfolk on 16 October. She decommissioned on 3 July 1946 and was placed in reserve until sold for scrap on 24 November 1947 to Lipsett, Incorporated, of New York City.
